As is often the case in this kind of situation, I draw too big. It is small, too small, in the eyepiece of my spotting scope. However, I paint it large on my sheet of thirty by forty centimeters. The usual consequence is that I get annoyed not to see all the details on my falcon that I would like to put there. It’s simple though, I don’t see them, that’s all. He is too far away, too blurry, but my perception makes me believe that all I see is him. The great contrasts are there, the intense light of this April day can be seen in the image. I won’t have the details, I will have the light. That is fine by me. Capturing the corners of the beak, the organization of the feathers on the wings, the fine nuances on the head to give him all his character. This bird is not a year old and I hope he is still a little naive. I would have liked to move forward, a little more, without disturbing him, always a little more and then what? This fateful moment will come, so criticized for having come too close. That extra step that will make him fly away. Not this time. Finding the right value without exaggerating the contrast, the right color by looking for the exact shade. And then, as often, while it is before my eyes and it is up to me to look, I discover the extent of the nuances of these shadows. At first glance they are all the same, “gray” to put it simply, but some tend towards green, others towards ochre, others towards blue. Tiny nuances that go unnoticed when looking at the landscape, but which when ignored in the painting, make it not fall right and feel that something is wrong. We do not notice their presence in the landscape, but their absence shocks us on the painting. As always, painting from observation is a school that forces us to observe and not only to see. I don’t immediately understand why she didn’t continue further, until she lets out a cry and I see her young one trot calmly towards her before stopping at the edge of the forest, trying to understand the reason for all this agitation. He doesn’t see me, doesn’t understand. I have time to study him through my binoculars. Another cry from the mother and they disappear up the hills. I grab my pencil and put down on paper everything I can of this observation.
